The Third Amendment
The Quartering Act of 1765 stated that British soldiers were to be housed in colonists' homes and that food and shelter must be provided. In order to prevent that from happening again, Checks and Balances (Amendment 3) stated that housing soldiers would be optional and could only occur if the owner gave his or her permission.
