The AOC
The Great Compromise was created after the failure of The Articles of Confederation. The AOC stated that each state would only get one vote in Congress, which soon became a disaster. An important weakness of the AOC was that the government was giving the states too much power. Soon after came the NJ & VA Plan and then the Great Compromise.
The VA & NJ Plan & The Great Compromise
Then came the Virginia Plan (which only the big states agreed with). The VA plan stated that larger states get more votes in Congress. Then came the New Jersey Plan (which only the smaller states like NJ agreed with). The NJ plan proposed that all states no matter the size should get the same amount of votes. Lastly, came The Great Compromise (also known as The Connecticut Plan). Robert Sherman proposed the idea that merged The VA and NJ plan together. The Great Compromise stated that each state gets two senators and a couple of representatives from the House of Representatives. The number would be determined by how large or small the population was.
