King George's Abuse of Power
One reason why it was important for America to separate from England was because King George imposed many taxes in the mid 1700’s, which really upset the Colonists because they had come to America for more freedom, not for more taxes. It began with the Stamp Act on March 22, “the act, which imposed a tax on all paper documents in the Colonies” (History.com staff). The Stamp Act was the first absurd tax imposed on the Colonies, but wasn’t the last. Soon after came the Townshend Act, then the Tea Act, and so forth. The Colonists also believed in “no taxation without representation” (Jonathan Mayhew). This meant that England should not be able to tax the Colonies unless they had permission from the Parliament. The Colonists claimed that the taxes were illegal--which led to the Declaratory Act. “Parliament repealed the Stamp Act and simultaneously passed the Declaratory Act, which claimed that Britain had the right to tax the American colonies.” (Pearcy, Mark).
Federalisim
Federalism is the 3rd principal of the Constitution. It states the power the states and the nation have. For example, laws in Connecticut say that children under 16 must wear bike helmets when biking on a road, but the bike helmet laws in Maine could be totally different because the states get to decide about these things themselves. However, when the government makes a law states do not get to decide whether or not they will follow this law.
